U.S. Carbon Emissions -
U.S. energy-related Carbon Dioxide emissions were 10% lower in 2013 than in 2010! The switch since 2006 to less-carbon-intensive energy sources such as natural gas has averted over One Billion Metric Tons of CO2 emissions. Read more...
Natural Gas...powering a cleaner tomorrow
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the average emissions from natural gas-fired electric generation are: 1,135 pounds per MegaWatt (lbs/MWh) of carbon dioxide, 0.1 lbs/MWh of sulfur dioxide, and 1.7 lbs/MWh of nitrogen oxides. When compared to coal-fired electric generation, natural gas only produces half as much carbon dioxide, less than a third as much nitrogen oxides, and 1% as much sulfur oxides.
Natural Gas can be considered a 'green fuel'. As America works toward using renewable fuels for power generation, natural gas will play an important role to bridge the gap until the necessary infrastructure is in place to switch our grid to renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar farms. And it's not just power generation that can be "greened" by natural gas! Compressed natural gas is the most cost effective vehicle fuel and dramatically reduces emissions as well as our dependence on foreign oil.
By modifying every power plant and vehicle in use today to run on natural gas, the United States could greatly reduce air emissions. Virginia's natural gas plays a vital role in our nation's ability to achieve this goal.
